China’s alleyways – a photo essay

China’s unique 5,000 year old system of living densely together has created alleyways in virtually every city.  Even as skyscrapers are being erected, there always lies an adjacent alleyway teeming with noodle shops, massage bars, or a gaming arcade.

A glimpse of real China can always be found in these alleys.  This is where people play Mahjong or hang their meats to dry and store.  In these alleyways locals clutter and escape the high-rises and the unfamiliarity that is dawning their country.  In these alleyways almost anything can be found and expected.

In this article we have curated a gallery of some of these tight streets we’ve stumbled into on our journey around this country.  Some of them obviously hold shops where artisans are working in.  Others, filled with vehicles created intentionally for navigating around these tight spaces.  Most photos have pictures of locals doing whatever their business may be in these intimate spaces.  We hope you enjoy these photos.
